Plausible Values for competence assessments in the NEPS starting cohorts 1 to 4

The new version 2.0.0 of the R package „NEPSscaling“ extends the possibility of independent estimation of Plausible Values for competence assessments to the starting cohorts 1 to 4. It complements the previous range of version 1.0.0 for the starting cohorts 5 and 6. All available combinations of starting cohort, competence domain, and survey wave can be retrieved via the „currently_implemented()“ function of the package. In addition to the current R package, new application examples have been made available on the website.

Online and International: Review of the 5th NEPS Conference

The 5th International NEPS Conference of the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) took place on December 7 and 8, 2020. Around 300 participants from 11 different countries met – for the first time in a purely online event format. In her keynote speech,  Director of LIfBi and Project Leader of NEPS, Prof. Dr. Cordula Artelt, looked back on the first 10 years of the education panel. Guest speaker was Prof. DPhil Michelle Jackson from Stanford University on the topic "Is Socioeconomic Inequality Fundamental?". In addition, the "NEPS Publication Award" was presented for outstanding papers based on NEPS data.

With NEPS-SC5-ADIAB, researchers now have another data package available for scientific analyses. It combines the survey data of respondents from NEPS Starting Cohort 5 (First-Year Students) on the individual level with administrative data of the Federal Employment Agency (BA).

NEPS data used by over 2,500 researchers worldwide

The number of scientists registered for using data from the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) has exceeded the threshold of 2,500 users in July 2020. Over the past year and a half, on average almost 25 data users per month have been added.

LIfBi employees engaged in publishing Corona special issues of "Soziale Welt" and "Frontiers in Psychology

Two renowned journals, "Soziale Welt" and "Frontiers in Psychology", have announced special issues on the Covid-19 pandemic. In both cases, researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) are involved as editors. Abstacts can be submitted for both journals as of now.

7th NEPS Full Staff Meeting

On June 18, 2020, the 7th Full Staff Meeting of the National Education Panel Study (NEPS) was held. The invitation of the chairperson, Dr. Manja Attig, was accepted by 101 employees of LIfBi and the NEPS Network partners. At the meeting, the NEPS staff representatives, Dr. Manja Attig, Helene Gress and Benjamin Schulz, discussed the exceptional events of the past year in the NEPS and the challenges that the further development of the Institute poses for the staff, but also for the NEPS studies. In addition, Prof. Dr. Cordula Artelt, LIfBi Director and Head of NEPS, looked back on the past 10 years of NEPS on the occasion of its anniversary and reported together with Dr. Jutta von Maurice on current developments in NEPS.

The National Educational Panel Study opens up for the first time to external survey content

The National Educational Panel Study invites all interested researchers to submit proposals for new survey modules in all NEPS starting cohorts. With the first "Call for Modules", the NEPS now opens its survey program to external content. The deadline for sending in a short outline is 30 September 2020.

RDC adds video tutorials to its NEPS service portfolio

As of now, interested persons can find two video tutorials on the website of the Research Data Center (RDC, Forschungsdatenzentrum FDZ) to introduce the survey design of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) and to explain the data structure of the Scientific Use Files offered.

Plausible Values for competence data of NEPS Starting Cohorts 5 and 6 available

With the current Scientific Use File of Starting Cohort 5 (First-Year Students, version 14.0.0), so-called Plausible Values (PV) were published for the first time for the main domains of competence data. For Starting Cohort 6 (Adults, version 11.0.0), a similar data offering will follow very soon. For further NEPS starting cohorts, the addition of Plausible Values is already in preparation. Besides the provided PV variables, the freely available R-package „NEPSscaling“ provides the possibility to generate independently suitable Plausible Values for own analysis purposes.

Largest representative survey on the impact of coronavirus on educational biographies launched

As part of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS)—the largest long-term study on education in Germany—all participants are currently being surveyed concerning the corona pandemic. In the current and all upcoming surveys, the effects of the corona pandemic on everyday school, work, and family life will be examined. As a result, we will be able to research not only retrospective differences in dealing with the crisis but also long-term consequences for educational biographies in Germany.

New version for linked data package NEPS-SC6-ADIAB available

4/28/2020

A new version of the data package „Survey data from the adult cohort of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS-SC6) linked with administrative data of the Institute for Employment Research (ADIAB)“, first released in April 2018, is now available. On the one hand, the new version includes administrative data from 1975 to 2017 and thus offers an extension of the covered time span by two years. On the other hand, the survey data of the NEPS Starting Cohort 6 now extend up to and including the tenth wave. Data users involved in projects with an existing data use agreement for NEPS-SC6-ADIAB can informally apply for an update by sending an e-mail to the Research Data Center of the Federal Employment Agency at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB-FDZ).

5th International NEPS Conference to be held in Bamberg on 7-8 December 2020

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) hopes for a normalization of the situation in the wake of the corona crisis and plans to continue its series of international conferences with the 5th NEPS Conference in Bamberg on 7 and 8 December 2020. From now on, contributions can be submitted for paper and poster presentations on all topics of empirical educational research. Education research in times of the coronavirus crisis: LIfBi plans additional survey in all NEPS cohorts

What impact does the coronavirus crisis have on educational trajectories? How do daily routines of school and work life function, and what changes does COVID-19 bring to everyday life? A short survey on these current developments is currently being prepared among participants of the National Education Panel Study (NEPS) in all six starting cohorts. An online survey will start in May.

Developing and applying statistical methods: Appointment of Christian Aßmann as Professor for Survey Statistics and Data Analysis

He has been affiliated with the National Education Panel Study (NEPS) for over ten years and has been acting Head of the Department “Research Data Center, Method Development” at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) since 2016. Now, Prof. Dr. Christian Aßmann has been appointed to the department of Survey Statistics and Data Analysis at the University of Bamberg.
