In 2020, the Research Data Center (Forschungsdatenzentrum, FDZ) will again be offering several training events on how to handle the data from the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) at the LIfBi site in Bamberg. With NEPS-SC4-ADIAB, a new data package for scientific analysis is now available to researchers. It combines the survey and competence data of the NEPS Starting Cohort 4 (Grade 9) with administrative data of the Federal Employment Agency (BA).

New data for the NEPS Starting Cohort 3 are now available in version 9.0.0 for scientific use.

On November 7-8, 2019, the international NEPS conference took place for the fourth time at LIfBi. Guest speaker was Prof. Eric A. Hanushek from Stanford University, one of the most renowned education economists in the world today. Once again, this year, prizes were awarded for outstanding works based on NEPS data. The award-winning entries deal with, among other things, school-related helplessness that may be experienced by students with poorer performance and also with the effects that higher education can have on health and wages.

An updated data version 10.0.1 for the NEPS Starting Cohort 6 is now available for scientific use.

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories has been offering "NEPS Results Compact" for some years now—these short summaries of current research projects on the basis of data from the National Education Panel Study provide information in a concise form on some of the most important results.

At this year's conference of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) at the RWTH Aachen, LIfBi researchers presented their current research work. The motto of the conference from August 12–16, 2019 was "Thinking Tomorrow's Education: Learning From the Past, in the Present, and for the Future".

LIfBi Director Prof. Dr. Cordula Artelt presents the National Education Panel Study (NEPS) as part of the meeting of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BAdW) on June 28, 2019. Other lecturers on the subject of "educational paths" include former LIfBi Director Prof. Dr. Sabine Weinert (University of Bamberg/BAdW) and the first NEPS Principal Investigator Prof. Dr. Dr. Hans-Peter Blossfeld (University of Bamberg/BAdW). The short lectures will take place at Universität 2 at 1 p.m. and are open to academy members and all members of the University of Bamberg.

On November 7 and 8, 2019, the 4th International NEPS Conference takes place at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories, for the first time in combinationwith the conference „Bildung und Raum“ on November 6, 2019. Abstracts can now be submitted online. The deadline for submission is 15 July 2019.

An updated data version 8.0.1 for the NEPS Starting Cohort 3 is now available for scientific use.

At the conference of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) in Toronto at the beginning of April, the team of the LIfBi refugee study “ReGES–Refugees in the German Educational System” presented their research design as well as first findings on the school integration of refugees. The project group also addressed different conditions for the integration of refugees and the use of care facilities for families with preschool children. “Many are concerned with questions about the opportunities of young refugees in their transition to vocational training. We will be able to answer these and other questions with ReGES in the coming years,” says Dr. Jutta von Maurice, Head of the study financed by the German Ministry for Education and Research. In addition, first findings on German-language proficiency of young refugees were discussed during an international session organized by the liaison office “International Cooperation in Education” (ice).

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) organizes two related conferences: On 6 November 2019, the conference "Education and Space" will discuss current quantitative-empirical analyses in educational research on spatial questions. This will be followed by the 4th International NEPS Conference on 7 and 8 November 2019 with empirical contributions from all areas of educational research and a special focus on internationally comparative approaches.

It was not the official motto for the celebrations but somehow still remained a central theme of the evening: fortune and change. On April 2, 2019, the outgoing Interim Director of the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) Prof. Dr. Sabine Weinert passed the symbolic baton to the new Director Prof. Dr. Cordula Artelt—a day of joy and change.

The Priority Programme 1646 “Education as a Lifelong Process. Analyzing Data of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS)” of the German Research Foundation (DFG) is now in its third funding phase. As part of the event on February 14 and 15 at the LIfBi, the research projects presented their current work in 16 presentations and exchanged their results and methodological challenges.

New data for the NEPS Starting Cohort 3 are now available in version 8.0.0 for scientific use.

The Institute for Employment Research (IAB) has been conducting the panel "Labour Market and Social Security" (PASS) for more than ten years. One of the central problems of long-term surveys, however, is the ability to instantaneously record events that occur between individual time points of the survey. In order to remedy this weakness, but also to obtain very specific data on smartphone use, the IAB has developed an Android application as part of a feasibility study for PASS.
