First language helps young people with migrant background when it comes to reading

1/3/2017
A current study based on data from the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) confirms: young people with migration background benefit from good proficiency in their first language when reading German texts.

The publication by Aileen Edele, Research Assistant at the Institute for Educational Quality Improvement (IQB) at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Prof. Dr. Petra Stanat, Director of the IQB, was published in the February 2016 edition of the Journal of Educational Psychology (original title “The role of first-language listening comprehension in second-language reading comprehension.”). The finding has been summarized in plain language and is now available on the NEPS Website (Link).

In February, 2016, another study based on data from the National Educational Panel Study was published, which has also been summarized and is now available at NEPS concise and compact. Dr. Janina Söhn from the Sociological Research Institute (Soziologisches Forschungsinstitut, SOFI) at the University of Göttingen examined, the extent to which education and employment trajectories of adult immigrants are uninterrupted after migration to Germany (original title “Back to school in a new country? The educational participation of adult immigrants in a life-course perspective.” published in the Journal of International Migration and Integration).

All summaries of research results published on the basis of NEPS data can be found on the NEPS website at NEPS concise and compact.
