Workshop and guest lecture held by Prof. Dr. Josef Brüderl

On June 13 and 14, Prof. Dr. Josef Brüderl,
Professor of Sociology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, and Principal Investigator and Coordinating Director of the
German Family Panel (“Panel Analysis of Intimate Relationships and Family Dynamics”, pairfam), chaired the workshop “Applied Panel Data Analysis” at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories. Additionally, on June 14, 2016, he gave a guest lecture on some methodological lessons learnt from the German Family Panel (pairfam).
The 2-day workshop “Applied Panel Analysis” was primarily aimed at people interested in, but without any prior experience with, panel analyses. The workshop dealt with the analysis of causal effects and individual developmental trajectories as primary advantage of panel data compared to cross-sectional data. In the context of this topic, Prof. Dr. Brüderl gave an introduction to the within- methodology, in particular fixed-effects regression models, and growth curve models.
In his lecture on June 14, Prof. Dr. Brüderl presented results of methodological studies accompanying the German Family Panel pairfam. In the methodological experiments presented during his lecture, he demonstrated interesting links to the National Educational Panel Study. The focus was on dependent interviewing and event history calendar to prevent the seam effect, panel attrition, panel effects caused by intimate questions, and interviewer effects.
