LERN workshop for young researchers held at LIfBi on the use of complex data sets in the field of empirical education research

10/5/2015
From September 28 to October 2, 2015, a workshop supported by the Leibniz Education Research Network (LERN) on the use of large data sets from the field of educational research took place at the LIfBi in cooperation with the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), the GESIS–Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences, and the Institute for Educational Quality Improvement (IQB).
The workshop served to develop common research questions in the field of empirical educational research with a special focus on the respective data sets of NEPS (National Educational Panel Study), SOEP (German Socio-Economic Panel), PIAAC (Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies), and the Federal-State comparison studies of the IQB, which were all introduced in detail. This process of idea generation was accompanied by expert lectures, which were also open to LIfBi staff, on the topics of data fusion (Prof. Dr. Susanne Rässler, University of Bamberg), educational decisions (Prof. Dr. Jürgen Baumert, Max Planck Institute for Human Development), and career planning (Dr. Nico Giersig, Trimberg Research Academy). Research ideas developed during this workshop will soon be condensed into research proposals for future third-party grant applications. Moreover, the results will be discussed with experts of the involved institutes as part of a final meeting in December.
