Workshop “Overview and Opportunities of Surveying Social-Media Aspects in the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS)”

11/12/2013
On November 11, 2013, an expert workshop on the subject of “Overview and opportunities of surveying social-media aspects in the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS)” took place at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center (Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung).
For many young adolescents and adults, social media have become an important part of their daily private lives as well as their everyday work. Therefore, the NEPS takes a great interest in capturing the diverse aspects of social-media usage in future surveys. As part of this workshop, Prof. Dr. Bernadette Kneidinger (University of Bamberg), Dr. Stephanie Pieschl (University of Münster), and Dr. Jan-Hinrik Schmidt (Hans Bredow Institute at the University of Hamburg) gave insights into different research topics on the Web 2.0 technology and presented findings in relation to the following thematic fields:
  • New networked publics
  • Self-representation on the internet
  • Searching, exchanging, and assessing information
  • Utilization of online social capital
  • Risk awareness on the internet
  • Social and political participation
Following the lectures, a lively discussion ensued between the experts and the NEPS scientists (including representatives of Stages 4, 6, and 8, as well as Pillars 2, 4, 5, and the Working Group Interest, Self-Concept, and Motivation) about possible questions to be derived from this for the National Educational Panel Study and the ways in which this content could be included in future surveys. The workshop gave the NEPS researchers new ideas that will ensure that the study is even more closely connected with the life worlds of its target persons. The NEPS representatives gladly welcomed the offer made by all participating experts to assist them in the conceptualization and implementation of this content and to stay in touch with the NEPS.
