PD Dr. Oliver Lipps presented the Swiss Household Panel

2/17/2012

PD Dr. Oliver Lipps visited the National Educational Panel Study in order to report on the Swiss Household Panel (SHP). In his lecture, he introduced the comparatively young panel, which is designed after the British Household Panel, and focused in particular on the questionnaires, the samples, the panel mortality and the countermeasures taken as well as data access and use.

The SHP has been interviewing households, i.e. persons aged 14 and older living in one household, in German, French and Italian via telephone since 1999. The interviewees are selected by taking random samples from the phone register for fixed landlines. The interview topics range from sociodemographic and economic issues to events, social participation, values and attitudes, health and psychological topics. A lively discussion started during the lecture when the panel mortality was being reviewed and the countermeasures taken were being presented. Especially the effectiveness of those countermeasures attracted wide interest. The data of the study has been available for free download since 2008 and the number of users has been increasing from wave to wave.
