Hartmut Ditton, Prof., Dr. phil., was born in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1956 and received his training in Education and Sociology at the University of Landau. He was research assistant and assistant professor at the Catholic University of Eichst&auml;tt. His Habilitation was on social and regional effects on educational decisions. In 2000 he became Full Professor at the University of Osnabr&uuml;ck. Since 2001 he has held the Chair of Research in Education and Socialization at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. Since then he received two more offers for Chair of Educational Research. He is working on issues related to inequality, instructional quality and quality management in education and has published several books, book chapters and articles in reviewed journals. He is a member of the steering committee for regular assessments in schools of the German L&auml;nder and, among others, Member of the Advisory board for the MPIB in Berlin (since 2007). He serves as reviewer for several journals and public research funding organizations (DFG, BMBF) and has continuously directed research projects, mainly funded by DFG. Among those is a longitudinal study on development of competencies and choice of school after elementary school, ranging from 2nd to 4th grade.
