1 Master sample: First-year students (panel entry in 2010/11)

1.1 Target persons: First-year students of winter semester 2010/11

• Sample: A single-stage stratified cluster sampling was drawn from the population of first-year students at public and state-approved, church or private universities studying for a bachelor’s degree, a state examination, or an arts or church degree. Each area of studies at a given university represents a cluster. Students at private universities and students in teacher training were considered disproportionately. In addition, a full population survey of nontraditional students (persons qualified through vocational training without a university entrance qualification from school) was conducted.
  

Field time: Recruiting (universities of applied sciences: from October 2010, universities: from November 2010), CATI survey main field  (universities of applied sciences: October 2010-July 2011, subsequent survey planned after completion of online survey; universities: November 2010-July 2011), competence test (universities of applied sciences: March-June 2011, universities: April-July 2011), online survey (October-December 2011)

Data collection: Infas – Institute for Applied Social Sciences, Bonn, (responsible for the PAPI and CATI survey) and DZHW - German Centre for Research on Higher Education and Science Studies (responsible for the online survey)

Mode of survey: Written questionnaire (for recruiting and competence test, PAPI), computer-assisted telephone interview (CATI), and online survey
