Presenting an information booth on the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) appeared at the annual meetings of the Verein für Socialpolitik and the Subdivision Educational Research (Arbeitsgruppe Empirische Pädagogische Forschung) as well as the biennial congresses of the German Society for Psychology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychologie) and the German Sociological Association (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie).

At this year’s annual SLLS conference “Lives in Translation: Life Course Research and Social Policies” in Lausanne, Switzerland, from October 9 to 11, 2014, the founder of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), Prof. Hans-Peter Blossfeld, now with the European University Institute, Italy, succeeded Prof. Elizabeth Cooksey, Ohio State University, USA, in the SLLS presidential office.

BMBF approves add-on study for NEPS Starting Cohort 5–First-Year Students in Higher Education

As part of the opening ceremony of the 37th Congress of the German Association for Sociology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie, DGS) in Trier, Professor Jutta Allmendinger Ph.D., President of the Berlin Social Science Center (Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung, WZB) was honored with the “Award for outstanding achievements in  public impact of sociology”.  Professor Allmendinger is a cooperation partner of LIfBi in connection with the implementation of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS).

Longtime NEPS colleague selected as winner of this year´s Bruce Choppin Award

Rolf Strietholt, Research Assistant at the Institute for School Development Research (IFS) at TU Dortmund University and longtime colleague in Stage 4 “From Lower to Upper Secondary School“ of the National Educational Panel Study, has been selected as the winner of the IEA Bruce H. Choppin Memorial Award 2014 (International Association for The Evaluation of Educational Achievement) for his dissertation entitled “'Using the World as an Educational Laboratory' Revisited: Methodological Foundations for Utilizing Recent and Older International Large-Scale Studies for Educational Effectiveness Research.” The entire LIfBi team sends their congratulations!

First Annual General Meeting of the National Educational Panel Study

The National Educational Panel Study NEPS is a nationwide network of excellence that brings together expertise in the field of educational research from different locations.

Five years after its foundation, NEPS has turned from a temporary research project to a research-based infrastructure permanently financed under the funding agreement between German Federal and State Governments. As of January, NEPS is being carried out by the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) at the University of Bamberg, which has been founded primarily for this purpose. This transformation requires a restructuring of the organizational base of NEPS.

LIfBi at GEBF and DGfE

LIfBi presented itself and the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) at the second meeting of the Association for Empirical Educational Research (Gesellschaft für empirische Bildungsforschung, GEBF) in Frankfurt am Main from March 3 to 5, 2014, and at the anniversary conference commemorating 50 years of the German Association of Educational Science (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Erziehungswissenschaft, DGfE) in Berlin from March 9 to 12. NEPS researchers appeared at these conferences by GEBF and DGfE holding numerous symposia, poster presentations, and making other contributions.

Bavarian State Minister Dr. Spaenle visits the LIfBi

On Thursday, February 27, Bavarian State Minister for Education and Cultural Affairs, Science and the Arts, Dr. Ludwig Spaenle, paid a visit to the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) at the Otto-Friedrich-University in Bamberg. Minister Dr. Spaenle has accompanied and supported the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) for years and maintains regular contact. Yet still, his visit on February 27 marked a special occasion for two reasons: It was the first visit by Dr. Spaenle to this educational research institution in his role as Minister with a joint responsibility for both education and science. At the same time, this was also his first call on the newly founded Leibniz Institute at the University of Bamberg, which had been launched in January. As of the New Year, the NEPS is being carried out by the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories at the Otto-Friedrich University in Bamberg. Among the 60,000 study participants, and 40,000 additionally interviewed people from their respective social surroundings, this biggest German educational study is known by the name of “Bildungsverläufe in Deutschland” (Educational Trajectories in Germany).
