Questions for the Research Data Center: RemoteNEPS FAQ

Questions and answers

What are the system requirements for RemoteNEPS?

To use RemoteNEPS you need a browser and a connection to the internet. The browser must have cookies enabled (also cookies from third-party providers) and allow pop-ups from the "remote.neps-data.de" and the “auth.neps-data.de" domains.

In the info box on the right you can find several links which allow you to test whether your computer already meets all the system requirements.

How can I change my password?

To change your password sign in to the RemoteNEPS-Gateway:

1. Click on “Preferences” (in the upper right menu)

2. Choose the tab “General”

3. Change your password under “Change Password”

Attention
: Your changed password also applies when logging on to the web portal and all of our other services.

Is it that bad if there's a typo in the typing sample?

The keystroke biometrics checks how you type more so  than which words you actually produce. The default sentence serves solely to measure certain characteristics (e.g., letter transitions, case sensitivity) of your typing behavior. You can currently make up to 3 "Errors" (deviations from the default sentence). Keystroke biometrics will continue to recognize you. If too many deviations from the given sentence are made, you must enter the sentence again.

Why do I get logged off automatically after a period of time?

RemoteNEPS has some security function that automatically protect against unauthorized access. This function includes, among others, the automatic blocking of the RemoteNEPS-Desktop after 5 minutes of user inactivity and the automatic termination of the sessions on the RemoteNEPS-Gateway during longer periods of inactivity.

Can I import and export files (syntax, text, graphics…) in RemoteNEPS?

Yes, files can be exchanged. This will be verified for content-related and technical purposes during import and export by the Research Data Center staff, and additionally archived on our systems.

There is a specific drive (X: "exchange") on the RemoteNEPS-Desktop for the import and export of files.

In order to export data, store it in "X:\export". Afterwards, log on to the NEPS web site (not the RemoteNEPS!) with your User-ID and open the RemoteNEPS website. In the right column you will find the Import- and Export-Control. Click on "Export" and confirm the displayed information. Your files will then be suspended for verification. As soon as your files are verified, you will be contacted by email and, after logging on to the NEPS web site, you may download the files (right column, Exports).

The process for importing is exactly reversed:

1. Log on to the NEPS website

2. Open the RemoteNEPS website

3. Right column, RemoteNEPS, Import-Button

4. Upload preferred file (if several files, please pack as ZIP file without password)

5. [Verification of files by Research Data Center staff]

6. [Notification via email as soon as import is available]

7. You can open the files on the RemoteNEPS desktop under “X:/import”

When opening RemoteNEPS initially, my browser asks whether to enable scripts and install plugins. Should I allow that?

Yes, you should! In order to set up an encrypted connection between your computer and the RemoteNEPS it is necessary for your browser to execute several commands from the RemoteNEPS-Gateway. If required, you will receive a notification from the browser for these procedures. Please confirm this notification and enable them permanently.

This notification should only appear the first time the website is opened or if the permission was only given for a single instance.

I would like to import several files at once. Is that possible? And if so, how do I have to package them?

When using the import feature, generally only one upload of a file per import procedure is possible. If you want to upload more than one file, please package them as a zip file (without password!).

Only zip files are supported. Other packed formats (7z, tar,…) aren't accepted.

I bookmarked RemoteNEPS on my computer. Why do I keep receiving an error message after signing in to the keystroke biometrics?

When you log on to "https://remote.neps-data.de", your browser will receive a cookie and redirect you to “https://auth.neps-data.de/...” This is the first page you will get to see as a user. If you bookmark this page now, then you will later always be redirected to this “second” page without receiving the relevant cookie. Bookmarks should always contain the address “https://remote.neps-data.de”.

I cannot sign in to keystroke biometrics. What can I do?

If you receive an error message saying “ERROR – An error occurred while processing your request…”, please check that
1. you fulfill all the necessary system requirements (see box at top right),

2. the page “https://remote.neps-data.de” is your the initial entry point (e.g., careful when using bookmarks; only this exact site can be used to to start your session),

3. no browser add-ons (e.g., NoScript or similar) have been active for the site that could have possibly prevented you from logging on.
