First data package of the ReGES refugee study now available to researchers

7/9/2021

With the first release of Scientific Use Files (SUF) of the study ReGES "Refugees in the German Educational System", researchers can now access the data of the first two of a total of seven survey waves and use them for their own analyses. The Research Data Center of the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (FDZ-LIfBi) is thus expanding its range of services and will make the carefully prepared data available for scientific purposes in various degrees of anonymization free of charge and together with extensive documentation material on the new website www.reges-data.de/en-us from July 9, 2021.

Within the ReGES project, refugee children and adolescents as well as their families were interviewed in several survey waves. Parents and adolescents provided information on personal and flight-specific characteristics as well as on their lives and educational experiences in Germany. The refugees also had the opportunity to report on educational goals and aspirations for the future. Data from the educational professionals and full-time and volunteer workers in the communities and shared accommodations were also collected and are included in the SUFs that have now been released. Thus, with the support of funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the ReGES study was able to create a rich database on the situation of refugee children and adolescents in the German education system, which is now also made available to the scientific community.

The first SUFs contain the data sets based on the first and second survey waves in 2018. Two cohorts were examined: first, 2,405 children of kindergarten age, and second, 2,415 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 16 who were attending secondary general education schools at the time. Subsequent SUF releases are planned for December 2021 and in the year 2022.

LIfBi's RDC allows registered data users to access the Scientific Use Files via the now dedicated website www.reges-data.de/en-us. Prerequisites for registration are the conclusion of a data use contract and the affiliation of the data user(s) to a scientific institution. Further information on the study design, the implementation of the surveys as well as on the instruments, the data and the access options can be found on the website.
